Alloy Assists Client with 3D Point Cloud

Recently, Alloy Mechanical Inc. was contracted by a Fire Systems company to create a 3D Point Cloud for a facility where existing drawings were either missing or outdated.

In one day, Alloy's scanning team performed an on-site walkthrough and scan of the facility's equipment needing fire suppression installed. Information was captured as millions of points of data within tolerances of 1/4".

Within a week, the facility was scanned, the information registered, and a point cloud file was delivered, enabling the fire system contractor to begin their work building an up-to-date solution.

The contractor saved time measuring on-site. Engineers could begin work more rapidly using a digital representation of the environment, and the facility was able to capture a record of their as-built environment.

New Team Members | Alloy Mechanical Inc.

Alloy is proud to introduce two recent additions to our team:

Don Doran joined Ally in October 2021 as Shop Superintendent. He brings in over 25 years’ worth of field experience and leadership. Doran is a 30-year member in good standing with the Local 597 Pipefitters Union and has many complex projects under his belt.

He will assist with project estimating, lead crews, and oversee the day-to-day fabrication operations in our shop.

Don Orban joined Alloy in November 2021 as Product Manager. He has over 25 years of experience in IT. He previously served as Director of IT, leading a team of developers creating web-based SaaS products in the human services sector. Orban holds a Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University and a Master of Business Information Technology from DePaul University.

He will lead Alloy’s efforts to design and develop advanced XR and IT solutions for our customers.

Vibration Analysis | Alloy Mechanical Inc.

In a Texas A&M University Turbomachinery Laboratories study titled, “ Piping Vibration Analysis ” the authors state, “Piping vibration failures have been one of the major causes of downtime, fires and explosions in industrial plants…”

3D Laser Scanning | Alloy Mechanical Inc.

3D laser scanning creates a detailed "point cloud" to capture real-world elements for review or archive. Scans allow remote engineers to "see" a space, view measurements, and create models or CAD designs.

Alloy uses the Leica RTC360 3D laser scanner.

Lightweight portable scanning solution
36 megapixel three-camera system captures 432 megapixel raw data as a 360° x 300° spherical color image
Captures scans, including High-Dynamic Range (HDR) imagery in less than two minutes
Measuring rate of up to two million points per second

We are proud to announce the addition of the HoloLens 2 to the Alloy team. The HoloLens 2 is a mixed reality device that allows user to view holographic images in real time and space. Unlike virtual reality, the user of the HoloLens 2 can interact with both the real world and virtual world simultaneously.

For our client, we can set up virtual meeting rooms and load your facility models in the rooms. This allows our team and our client’s team to interact with one another as well as the model in real time and space from anywhere in the world. Clash detection, design review, scope changes, they can all be done interacting with the model with multiple users in any location.

Not only that, but we are able to take those same models and overlay them in real space within a client’s facility to see exactly how the new piping, equipment, etc., will fit in the existing space. Clients are able to virtually walk through their design while physically walking through the space. This allows much more efficient planning and construction to ensure the client gets exactly what they are looking for.

3D Modeling | Alloy Mechanical Inc.

3D models are becoming the standard for the construction industry due to their accuracy, ease of use, and aid in visualization. Use these models for design, review, clash detection, and monitoring progress and deviations.

We use our 3D laser scanner to create and register point clouds into highly accurate models. These models allow Alloy to design and fit new features without costly site visits.

Models can be shared and reviewed remotely to minimize project delays and reduce the need for in-person meetings. As a result, Alloy provides better communication and accuracy between the design team and the client – at lower costs.
